Exercise Science and Movement Science Student Internship Objectives

The internship is an important component of the Exercise Science and Movement Science programs and provides students with hands on experience under the guidance of a practicing professional in exercise physiology, wellness, nutrition or physical therapy. Programs for an internship include wellness, physical and cardiac rehabilitation, employee fitness, fitness center, work performance, sports medicine and sports management. The internship is designed to enhance the student's professional preparation by application of fundamental concepts previously learned. To insure the internship provides the experience required, the intern should keep a daily log of his or her on site experiences.

Objectives of an internship include (where applicable) but are not limited to:

Fitness assessment:

oMaximal and sub-maximal aerobic testing
oBody composition analysis
oStrength Testing
oBlood pressure evaluation both at rest and during exercise
oExercise Prescription according to the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines
oCardiac risk factor screening

Cardiac Rehabilitation:

o Phases I, II and III
o Risk factor screening
o ECG:
o Electrode placement
o Interpretation

Nutrition:

o Diet assessment
o Weight management programs
o Nutrition counseling

Physical Rehabilitation:

o Assess proper body mechanics
o Evaluation and prescription following de-conditioning or immobility
o Range of motion exercises

Experience with varied populations:

o Gerontology
o Children
o Handicap

Exercise leadership:

o Lead exercise or fitness programs
o Aerobic
o Strength Training

Program Development:

In addition to the above, the intern should:

oInitiate a program in a special area of interest
oBe involved with the personnel and participate in meetings and workshops
oStudy the current scientific literature related to the internship site
oObserve or participate in the administration of the internship site
